"I will always look back on my trip with Switchback to the AT, fondly. When I initially heard about the trip,I didn't think I would be able to swing it... I was worried about costs, lack of equipment, timing, travel etc. Sam and the team at Switchback quickly made a trip that didn't seem possible for me - work. Switchback didn't miss a single detail when answering questions about our trip. I immediately felt at ease knowing I was going on a trip with not only experts in backpacking - but all around excellent humans whom I could trust.
"In October 2018, I was looking for an opportunity to get out of my comfort zone, clear my head, and have a new experience. When I heard about Switchback's trip to the Appalachian Trail, I knew that was it! It was everything I had hoped, and so much more! During the 5 day trip, I was able to learn more about overnight hiking, push my physical limits safely, and make amazing new friends. I even gained a new name - Mudslide! The challenging trails were well-worth the mountain top views, and the feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day reminded me of how strong I am and what I am capable of doing.
Sam and Emily were awesome guides, and my fellow hikers quickly became friends. We laughed harder than I had laughed in a long time, and I am grateful to have shared this trip with them. If you are looking for a unique way to explore nature, or you just need a little adventure in your life, I highly recommend going with Switchback. They thoughtfully created an experience that I will never forget and I look forward to joining them again!" -Elizabeth
"I am the type of person who likes to have an adventurous goal to look forward to, I often have a biking or outdoor event coming up to prepare for and get excited about. Last summer was no different, I had the chance to go on the first Best of Appalachian Trail expedition with Switchback. I was instantly intrigued by the thoughts of hiking a part of the country I knew little about, meeting some new people, and spending a few days without electronics.
I had ideas for how the trip would go, both good and bad, but often I was wrong. The van trip could have been long and awkward, but we all quickly became friends. I hadn’t been worried about my backpacking fitness, but some of the hiking portions certainly pushed my limits. The stoves were a learning experience, but the snacks and meals were amazing. The act of picking trail names for people is hilarious, and like it or not sometimes they just stick. I learned the difference between type 1 and type 2 fun, and we had plenty of both. I thought I would miss my phone, but I found that being part of the group laughing, talking, eating, and enjoying the scenery, was all I really needed to be connected with for those few days.
I obviously can’t wait to go on another trip, to make new friends, see interesting places, and try new things." -Dave
"One of my most favorite adventures I have experienced was hiking a portion of the Appalachian Trail with Switchback Expeditions. This was on my bucket-list and did not disappoint! I went in not really knowing what to expect, and came out with lifelong friends, skills I will use the rest of my life, and an appetite for back-packing I can’t wait to fill. The team from Switchback helped make this a positive experience right from the start. They helped us pick our gear and taught us how to pack. We learned hiking etiquette, how to manage our nutrition, how to set up camp and use our equipment.
We hiked through varying terrains; from rocky wooded trail, through open prairie and lush forests. We shared stories and so many laughs. I now have a new bucket-list item: to thru hike a trail!" -Linda
